Happy Full Moon Drummers!
Special Announcements:
1. I don’t know if you have heard of The Mishras yet but if you have then you are going to be very excited by this announcement. Classical Indian artists The Mishras are coming to Nelson in April of 2009 to put on several local concerts and special music classes for Vocals, Sitar, and Tabla! Anyone who has had the special privilege of seeing The Mishras in concert will understand just how fantastic this news is. Especially exciting is the fact that The Mishras are putting on locally held Indian music classes for anyone who wants to attend here in Nelson. I have signed up for the Tabla classes and I am looking for more people to sign up as well. Please contact me if you are interested or want for details. You can also find out more information by checking out the following websites www.mishramusic.com, www.music-of-benares.com.
2. At a special site in Mexico there is going to be a celebration based on a very old prophecy that 8000 drums will play together for the 2009 Vernal Equinox celebration. The Drumming From The Heart community drum circle is going to join the world groups of drummers that are going to be performing for this historical celebration - by drumming at Lakeside Park on Saturday March 21st 2009 @11am for one hour. There will also be drumming immediately prior to this for the Nelson Labyrinth Vernal Equinox celebration that is held annually at the Labyrinth. So come on out, drum and/or just watch and take part in two significant Nelson community events.
3. Tomorrow night’s drum circle at the North Shore Hall is a very special Full Moon Celebration. Drumming in a group during the Full Moon can be a very transcendent sacred spiritual experience. Very special energy is released by the moon and earth at this time and it can be directly sensed and experienced when drumming in groups. I have myself many times experienced the difference drumming during a full moon – it is palpable and definitive.
More info on the Full Moon In Virgo happening tomorrow:
Everyone at some point lately seems to be in need of healing. The Full Moon in Virgo is especially suited for healing. This full Moon sits right on the Uranus/Saturn opposition that’s been the fight of the century, the OLD vs. the NEW!
The lesson of a full Moon is awareness, so use this time to become aware of these tensions in your life. Jung said that if we can bare the tension of opposites, a third, transcendent path will open to us. Now that the Sun and Moon, symbolizing the two types of consciousness, have finally caught up with this opposition, the inherent changes and challenges of this story will begin to manifest more strongly in our lives. Bear with it!
This full Moon will highlight the personal tensions this opposition brings us as well. What have you been trying to achieve? What haven’t you been able to let go of? The energies of Pisces and Virgo are very mystical, service-oriented and sublime. Both these signs demand that we let go of ego and allow Spirit its say. They both seek improvement of the situation. While Pisces knows that we are all one, Virgo knows that each of us has a part to play in the whole. These two signs unite the one and the many. Whatever we do from now on, must take everyone else – people, plants, animals, the Earth – into consideration. It’s the only thing that will get us through these trying times! So ask how you can be of service, and then go do it.

Here is some more interesting astrological information on this particular Full Moon in Virgo: (http://www.realastrologers.com/):
There is little doubt that the Full Moon on March 10 will focus our attention on the ongoing debate between the desire to retain the status quo and the yearning for meaningful reform, in both our personal lives and on a collective level.
The Moon will be full at 20°39′ Virgo, opposite the Sun at 20° 39′ Pisces, falling in close alignment with the Saturn-Uranus opposition. [Note that if you’re in the Eastern Hemisphere, the Full Moon falls on March 11.] It may help to keep in mind Virgo and Pisces are complements, and if we take the time to slow down and breathe, we stand a good chance of finding common ground. Yes, Saturn in Virgo is very anxious to make sure all the details are correct and prioritized, and Uranus in Pisces prefers to think in terms of universal good, ignoring the details, but both are service-oriented and are often willing to compromise as long as they feel the benefits will be spread around to all.
How you experience this opposition of course depends on where Saturn, Uranus, and the Full Moon fall in your chart. Generally speaking, however, what can paralyze Saturn is fear, creating the potential to fail out of sheer funk. Here is where Uranus in Pisces can come to the rescue by keeping faith alive and supplying innovative ways to work around existing shortcomings. By reaching out with compassion - a Pisces hallmark - we can do our part as individuals to help each other through the darker days.
Because the Sun and Moon both illuminate rather than obscure, I see this Full Moon as a great opportunity to evaluate what is really happening, gather the information we need to make informed decisions, and move forward with confidence.
It is always helpful to look to the rulers of the signs of the lunation. The planetary rulers of Virgo and Pisces are Mercury and Neptune, respectively. Neptune is still traveling in close conjunction with Chiron in Aquarius, calling attention to the wounds of the collective and the means to heal them.
Mars is pulling away from Neptune, having conjoined it on March 8, so we have received our marching orders and now need to implement them. There has seldom been greater urgency for being aware of the needs of humanity as a whole and viewing our friends and neighbors with kindness and compassion.
As of the Full Moon, Mercury is in Pisces and tightly sextile Pluto in Capricorn. I see this as a clear signal to clean up our communications and take the high road rather than pointing out the shortcomings of the system and those closest to us. Pluto gives words (Mercury) great power and clarity now.
Another interesting pattern in this chart is a Yod with Saturn in Virgo at the apex and retrograde Venus in Aries sextile Jupiter in Aquarius at the base. Although being retrograde subdues Venus in Aries, the sextile to Jupiter brightens her day. We still want to have some fun once in awhile. However, Saturn in Virgo is raining on the Venus-Jupiter parade, telling us we need to pay attention and not blow the entertainment budget out of the water.
Another way of looking at this Yod is to use the discipline and boundaries Saturn wishes to impose and draw on the creative potential of the Venus-Jupiter sextile to find healthy, inexpensive ways to enjoy ourselves. This pattern reminds me of going to a health food restaurant and biting into what appeared to be a beautiful dessert only to find out it was neither sweet nor a treat. Saturn in Virgo still has the upper hand here, so we may have no choice but to eat our veggies now.
The Sabian symbol for the Sun at 21 Pisces is, A little white lamb, a child and a Chinese servant, with the keyword WHITE HOPE. This image reminds us of the importance of maintaining a purity of vision and a childlike sense of wonder in our daily lives. Perhaps we can remember to supervise with a light touch rather than micro-managing everything and everyone in our lives, exhausting ourselves in the process.
For the Full Moon at 21 Virgo, the symbol is, A girls’ basketball team, with the keyword GROUP INTEGRATION. With the majority of the planets in the last quadrant of the zodiac, it is natural to focus on working together as a team for the good of the whole. By emphasizing fair play and teamwork, the possibility of achieving our mutual goals is much greater. This is not a good time to go it alone and ignore the needs of others.
There are major problems in the world-wide economy, and to my way of thinking, the need to be considerate of others and take time to truly listen is paramount. Both Virgo and Pisces represent the desire to take the health and well-being of others into account, and this is a wonderful time for all of us to do this. Perhaps the time has come to expand our concept of who belongs to our collective.
Blessings to all.
Excellent article on lessons of the Mayan Path:
In Lak’ech Ala K’in
The Living Code of the Heart
by Aluna Joy Yaxk’in
In Mayan tradition, there is a greeting that many people working with Mayan wisdom know of. It is the law of In Lak’ech Ala K’in, which means I am another yourself (A modern day interpretation). It also means I am you, and you are me (A traditional Mayan interpretation). We have come to understand that this Mayan greeting is an honoring for each other. It is a statement of unity and oneness. In Lak’ech Ala K’in mirrors the same sediment of other beautiful greetings such as Namaste for East India, Wiracocha for the Inca, and Mitakuye Oyasin for the Lakota. It doesn’t matter which culture you come from. But when one of these sacred greetings is given, there is always an action of placing the hands over the heart.
The more I walk the Mayan path, the more I understand the depth that In Lak’ech Ala K’in teaches. This greeting has become more than a simple, honorable Maya greeting. It has evolved into a moral code, and a way to create a positive reality for all life. As we near 2012 with all its doom and gloom prophecies, we have a moral obligation to Spirit to live the code of In Lak’ech Ala K’in.
It is common knowledge these days that every action we take in our lives affects all living things. We understand that if we act negatively, our actions impact all life negatively. When we act positively, we affect all life in a positive manner. When we live the Mayan code of In Lak’ech Ala K’in, we know that every action we take is out of respect for all life, and we are living and giving from our hearts.
We can give our hearts in a positive manner every day by saying In Lak’ech Ala K’in to each other, to the trees, to the sky, to the birds, and to the stars. You can greet each sunrise by saying In Lak’ech Ala K’in. Each and every day we have together is sacred, so acknowledge this day by giving it your heart. Remember when you give in this way, you are also giving to yourself! You are not giving your energy away to something separate from yourself. You are giving to another part of yourself!
I understand the challenges in staying positive in these days where the energy is so compressed that we can hardly breathe, but there is one simple exercise that can turn it all around for us. Each day, simply walk in gratefulness. We can say In Lak’ech Ala K’in to that which gives us life every day, and that is the heart of the Great Spirit. Instead of solely taking from the Great Spirit by asking for insight and direction, give back your heart, love, and appreciation. You will be amazed at the results. If we open our hearts and send gratitude, it opens all doors that were previously closed to us. Remember you are a part of Great Spirit! When you give to Great Spirit you are giving to yourself.
We can practice In Lak’ech Ala K’in tirelessly, because when and what we give to others is giving energy to ourselves. When we give, we receive. So how do we know if we are giving right? It is really simple. When we are energized by our giving, we know we are giving from our hearts and from the code of In Lak’ech Ala K’in. If we feel drained or exhausted, it is possible that we gave out of fear, lack, obligation, ego, or a need to be accepted or liked. The more one practices In Lak’ech Ala K’in, the clearer we will become about our motivations regarding our actions, and the more we will receive. Remember … what goes around comes around exactly the way it was sent out. If you don’t like what life is sending to you, look at what you are sending out to life.
When we begin to live and practice In Lak’ech Ala K’in, a lot of our old ways of doing things will no longer work for us. For instance, we cannot act like victims anymore, and we cannot live out of fear either. We find ourselves no longer preparing for disaster; instead we anticipate a glorious future. It is time for us to rewrite the prophecies. They have become obsolete. The past will become just a bad dream, and the future will become a beautiful vision of which we will create right now.
When we practice In Lak’ech Ala K’in, we quit being neutral in our world, because we understand that Spirit works with those that take action. We begin to take action by adding to the positive experience of this dimension. So what kind of world do you want? Don’t just stand there waiting for the world to appear in front of you. Spirit helps those who help themselves. It is up to us.
When we practice the moral code of In Lak’ech Ala K’in, we are producing and sending positive and vital energy that can literally transform our troubled world into Paradise. When we live from In Lak’ech Ala K’in, we are putting to use our natural ability to create our reality. We are affecting the collective consciousness of humanity in a positive way. The Cosmic Maya, also known as the “Star Elders” or “Invisible Council”, understood this natural power to create their reality. Their sacred calendars mapped the natural laws of the universe. Now it is our turn to come to this understanding. It is time for us to walk as the Star Elders did so many years ago. The time has come for us to change the world.
The more humanity begins to live In Lak’ech Ala K’in, the less we will think in terms of our separateness. There can be no competition, jealousy or envy between us, because we are pieces of each other. We can share and help each other with our connections, ideas and resources without fear that there will not be enough to go around. When we live the reality of unity, abundance and wholeness, there will be unity, abundance and wholeness! The more of us that participate in the creation of a better world, the quicker it will arrive. We will have peace, love, harmony and unity, and will finally have arrived home.

Vibrational Frequency: Ten Signs You've Raised Yours
The level of vibrational frequency at which you are operating is determined by the degree to which you are in alignment with Source, and allowing Source energy—Life Force, which is also known as “Love”—to move freely through you. You align with Source by obeying your inner guidance above all other voices, and you move Life Force through you by loving—by radiating the Love you receive from Source, out to your world.
As we choose to honor the voice of God within us, and allow Love to radiate from us, our vibrational frequency is elevated. When we raise our vibrational frequency, our world changes. Our perceptions are heightened and our ability to stay in the flow increases. Our desire to conform with anything that is not in alignment with Who We Are declines dramatically, and our life becomes about expanding and embracing joy. Here are ten symptoms of operating at higher frequency:
- Synchronicities have increased in your experience and you view them as “cosmic winks” and signs that you are on the right track
- You are more patient and compassionate and able to offer Love more consistently
- You see more and more clearly that you are, indeed, the Creator of everything in your experience—and you embrace that with gusto!
- Instead of inconveniences, you are now more likely to see unplanned events as opportunities
- Your choices in how you spend your time have changed and you no longer relate to some activities, companions, and entertainment choices you once enjoyed
- Your awareness of what is in alignment with your Truth is sharpened, and you are more and more willing to let go of whatever—and whomever—is not in alignment
- Things that were once problems have faded into the distance or disappeared altogether
- Your ability to gauge the integrity of others is heightened, and you attract more and more people into your life who are committed to living in integrity
- Your ego-need to control what happens is greatly diminished
- You are frequently joyful for no apparent reason!

Very interesting article on Drumming, Sound, and the Mind:
Binaural Beats for the Shamanic Journey
In early October 2008 I began having a recurring dream. In the dream I could hear an audible tone like the one I often hear when helping spirits are trying to communicate with me. That tone is usually a high pitched ringing in one ear or the other. I have learned to just stop what I am doing and tune into the sound. I still my mind, go within, and open myself up like a hollow bone. I may not always understand what the message is, if any.
The tone in my dream was different than a typical ringing in the ear. It was a lower tone. I also heard a voice telling me that this tone was very important. I had similar versions of this dream several times over. The message was the same each time; it was important for me to remember and use this fundamental tone in the cycle unfolding at this time on Earth. It was necessary for healing the heart.
In recent weeks, the U.S. economy has suffered the equivalent of a heart attack. Researchers say the decline of Wall Street and the mortgage crisis may take a heavy toll on your heart, especially if you are already at risk for cardiac problems. People are losing their jobs and homes. Companies are going bankrupt. We have collectively experienced fear and anxiety over the course of the past few weeks. What is needed now is a healing and balancing of the collective heart.
As a drummer I work a lot with opening up the heart in people. Drumming activates the heart chakra. It is very healing and transforming. There is often emotional release and a great sense of joy and bliss. I wondered if working with tones would affect the same healing.
Tone Healing
I began researching tone healing and found the pioneering work of Swiss mathematician Hans Cousto. In 1978 Hans Cousto discovered the law of the octave as the link between different kinds of periodically occurring natural phenomena such as the orbit of the planets and musical tones. The octave is a natural measure of the harmony of universal law and is the common denominator of astronomy, mathematics, music, and color.
Through the systematic application of the law of the octave it is possible to convert the whole solar system into sound. Hans Cousto established that the rotation of the earth around the sun has a base frequency of 136.10 Hz or C#. This astronomic actually causes the changing of the seasons. According to Cousto, this tone is the primal frequency of existence, or OM. Research indicates that it relieves stress, opens blocked energy pathways, restores inner peace and balance, and activates the heart chakra.
There is little doubt in mind that 136.10 Hz is the tone that I was hearing over and over in my dreams.
Binaural Beats
My research led me next to a form of tone healing called binaural beats. Until recently, entering transcendent states of awareness has been attained typically by only a disciplined few, practicing ancient meditative disciplines. These methods do work, but they require long periods of isolation and practice before producing significant results. Now there is a new technology that can easily induce those profound states of deep meditation and heightened awareness.
Researcher H.W. Dove discovered that when two tones close in frequency are presented, one to each ear, the brain detects the difference between them as a third frequency. This pulsating binaural beat is actually created inside your head, not externally. This is because your brain creates the beating tone after figuring out the difference between the lower carrier tone and the higher offset tone. The two hemispheres of the brain entrain to this binaural beat rather than the audible tones. For example, a 90 Hz tone and 95 Hz tone will induce a 5 Hz theta brainwave cycle.
Carrier tones used on binaural recordings also influence consciousness. Most binaural beat recordings place little importance on the choice of carrier tones. However, the appropriate carrier tones will not only induce a desired state of consciousness within minutes, but also activate a particular chakra. All you need is a pair of stereo headphones. The sound technology does the rest.

My research into tone healing and binaural beats culminated in a digital recording to support the listener in making shamanic journeys. Contact the author.

WHAT IS A DRUM CIRCLE?
A DRUM CIRCLE IS A GROUP OF PEOPLE COMING TOGETHER TO CREATE IN THE MOMENT MUSIC USING HAND DRUMS AND PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS. A DRUM CIRCLE IS NOT A PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE PERFORMING A PREPARED PIECE OF MUSIC, OR A DRUMMING CLASS LED BY A TEACHER, NOR ANY GROUP RE-CREATING MUSIC IT HAS PLAYED BEFORE. DRUM CIRCLES ARE A FORM OF RECREATIONAL MUSIC MAKING WHICH MEANS THAT THE FOCUS IS NOT ON PERFORMANCE BUT RATHER ON PERSONAL OR GROUP DEVELOPMENT AND WELLNESS OR JUST PLAIN FUN.
May your life be filled with Eternal Bliss and Ecstatic Joy!
Thank You!
