Happy New Years To All You Drummers!
It is soon time to drum together again in our wonderful sacred community drum circle! Yay! I have come to very much appreciate and enjoy the Drumming From The Heart drum circles since starting them almost 5 years ago. There is so much spirit, camaraderie, sharing, love, exploring rhythm, healing, fun, deep connection, creativity, and passion in our circle. I am very proud of how the circle has developed along a very sacred spiritual path with much healing and bonding occurring every time we get together.
I am so grateful to the universe for providing us with a great medium for our souls to drink of our music, love, and light. Thank you immensely to all of you who come to the drum circles and make them what they are – you are as spokes to the wheel without which there would be no circle. The divine in me sees the divine in you (Namaste).
Since it is the start of a brand new year and we have so many new people coming to the circles I thought it appropriate to go over some of the basics of drum circle etiquette:
- Please bring a drum or percussion item to play but if you don’t have any I do have some drums/toys for you to use.
- Don’t wear rings, watches, or bracelets while playing drums. This protects the head on the drum as well as the drum itself from the metal. It also protects your hands.
- Any drums or percussion devices inside the circle are free to anyone to use – if you do not wish anyone to play with your gear - stow it under or behind your chair. Always respect other’s drums and treat them with care.
- Unless you are soloing - play at the same volume level or lower than the rest of the group. If you can’t hear the drummer beside you – you are probably playing too loud.
- Listen, Listen, Listen, and Listen. Try not to live only in your own little drum world – group drumming is much more fun when you listen and interact with the group. This also helps create groovier drum circle songs.
- Do not play so hard as to hurt your hands. Easy does it for years of good drum playing fun – easier on the ears too.
- Remember you don’t hit a drum – you play it.
- When in doubt – stop and listen – have I mentioned listening yet?
- Always try to support the fundamental groove that you hear going on.
- Leave musical space for others to play in – play less than more.
- Be patient with yourself and others.
- Do not worry about being rhythmically challenged or whatever – it’s all good and it all adds wonderfully to the mix.
- If you have a question – ask.
- Make sure you bring fresh water to drink.
- Enjoy the experience and have fun!
This next drum circle we are going to drum a few special healing songs for my/our good friend and fellow drummer Maya, (Marianneke Heringa), who is very ill in the Nelson hospital. I ask that even if you do not come to the drum circle if you could just please take a few seconds to send her some love and light for her speedy recovery – even if you do not know her – every little bit helps – thank you very much. Maya has been very instrumental in keeping our drum circle happening through thick and thin and has been an avid participant right from the beginning in 2004. Please do not visit Maya in the hospital – she is in isolation and cannot take visitors easily. We are going to send her healing love and drum light every drum circle from here on out until she is well. The power of a group to effect healing is incredible and we have already witnessed this in our community drum circle more than once.
2009 promises to be a very important breakthrough year. The year 2009 in terms of numerology adds up to master number 11 – all manner of double digits are master numbers (22, 33, 44 etc.). 11 represents spiritual illumination and awareness, which you may have noticed seems to be a topic really coming to the fore in the world lately. People are becoming more aware and concerned about their spiritual purpose in life rather than the more materialistic goals we have been pursuing since the beginning of the industrial age. Check out this webpage if you want a quick primer on numerology: http://www.ofesite.com/spirit/numerology/numer.htm
Again I propose to you that this is in part because our local galaxy is now entering a higher frequency area of the universe known as the Photon Belt. Photons are particles of light. See my last News and Grooves entry at my blogspot: http://drummingfromtheheart.blogspot.com/ for a further detailed explanation of this phenomenon or Google it for more info.
Basically all of this means that our species sentient spiritual aspect is being accelerated. Our physical-emotional-mental-etheric vibrations are also increasing in frequency – we are becoming lighter and less dense (in every sense of the word). This is a good thing – it means we want to live more in love and peace rather than discord and war.
All the big shakeups and crises you’re seeing in the world right now are the result of the foundations of all things not love and peace crumbling. What isn’t able to maintain a higher vibration in this higher frequency energy field we are cruising through will not be able to exist because it is too “dense”. Therefore it must fall away and crumble and be transmuted into something less dense and “lighter”. In this sense “denseness” can be translated to mean fear, hate, jealousy, envy, guilt, violence, aggression, war, dishonesty, and all other sorts of ill will and negativity.
I for one welcome the new world where duality, polarity, and competition are less intense. A world where the virtues of the heart reign supreme. A world where “The One” indicates the unity of all realizing that we live on this one lump of wet clay and that we need to love and take care of this miraculous lump of clay and ourselves if we are to continue this beautiful journey and great experience of life on earth.
May you all have the most wonderful year with the most magical awe inspiring experiences and learnings.
In the Spirit of Love and Peace - See you in the circle…
Namaste

WHAT IS A DRUM CIRCLE?A DRUM CIRCLE IS A GROUP OF PEOPLE COMING TOGETHER TO CREATE IN THE MOMENT MUSIC USING HAND DRUMS AND PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS. A DRUM CIRCLE IS NOT A PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE PERFORMING A PREPARED PIECE OF MUSIC, OR A DRUMMING CLASS LED BY A TEACHER, NOR ANY GROUP RE-CREATING MUSIC IT HAS PLAYED BEFORE. DRUM CIRCLES ARE A FORM OF RECREATIONAL MUSIC MAKING WHICH MEANS THAT THE FOCUS IS NOT ON PERFORMANCE BUT RATHER ON PERSONAL OR GROUP DEVELOPMENT AND WELLNESS OR JUST PLAIN FUN.
May your life be filled with Eternal Bliss and Ecstatic Joy!
Thank You!
