Next Drumming From The Heart Kootenay Community Drum Circle:
Tuesday Evening December 16th, 2008: Special potluck Holiday Celebration – Last drum circle of 2008!
@ Nelson North Shore Hall
@ 7:15pm/8:45pm, $7.00/$5.00
@ 675 Whitmore Road
@ Nelson BC Canada.
Happy Holidays Drummers!
I’m just so thrilled about all the new and regular drummers coming out to the Drumming From The Heart drum circles as of late. Our attendance record used to be around 21 participants before the summer break but now since starting up again this last October that is the minimum number of participants with numbers going upwards of 25 and 26! Thank you all so very much. It is your energy that makes the circles what they are and I must say that they have been pretty darn groovy lately!
A few quick announcements:
-----------------------------------------
Tomorrow’s drum circle (Tuesday Dec.16th 2008) is going to be additionally celebrated by a potluck just before the drum circle begins – so please bring a finger food potluck dish to the North Shore Hall around 6:30pm and we’ll eat and be merry before we bang on our drums! In the spirit of giving for the holidays I ask that if you wish please bring a non-perishable food item for the Nelson Food Bank.
-----------------------------------------
This will be the last drum circle for 2008. The next drum circle will be on Tuesday January 13th 2009 which is exactly a month from tomorrow (in the new year).
-----------------------------------------
David Wells (The drummer who usually sits on my right side at the circle) and his roommate, Chris Wallace, are having a Christmas Party celebration on Dec 19th at their house in Rosemont. Dave would like to invite the people of the drum circle to the party. Time: Friday, Dec 19th - come by anytime after sundown. Place: 506 West Richards Street, located in Cedar Grove Estates on the way to the golf course, Phone 250.354.1312. Bring drums/instruments if you want. Dave's basement is really big and would be a good place for some impromptu jamming. We'll have some food to share...hope to see you there!
------------------------------------------
There is a very special Winter Solstice celebration called “From Darkness into Light” happening at the North Shore Hall on Sunday December 21st at 6:30pm to 9:30pm (bring donations for food bank). This is a special community celebration that will include, singing, rituals, poetry, and the Dances of Universal Peace. You won’t want to miss this one. Stuart @ 250.825.0012 for more information.
What is it about drumming – especially in community drum circles – that is becoming so appealing?
Many people are now being inexplicably drawn to these drum circle events which are popping up all over the country/nation – for that matter all over the world. I could sit here and expound for hours on all the reasons that people enjoy drum circles but here are a few main ones:
- Drum circles are a lot of fun where competition, comparison, skill level/ability – just don’t matter.
- Everyone loves the “entrainment” factor that comes into play in a musical group where everyone ties into the same pulse and feels connected through that creative “conscious sameness”.
- No one is really intently watching or judging anyone else in the circle – it’s all just us playing in the moment.
- You don’t have to know how to drum to have fun – it’s all quite basic and fun.
- Most drum circles (including Drumming From The Heart) are facilitated drum circles – there is a facilitator (me!) who guides the group through the different activities and songs – it is not a chaotic or anarchistic free-for-all with no direction. Yet there is still lots of room for personal creativity and individuality.
- The drum songs are not memorized or rotely repeated ad infinitum. They are mostly in-the-moment spontaneous creations that have a uniqueness based on the inspiration and input from the participants in the group. One group mix will never sound like another.
- Everyone really enjoys the camaraderie and community spirit that receives a great boost from the brotherhood of drumming. It’s like joining a musical family that feeds your spirit and soul. You can embrace and immerse yourself in the human connection created by the group drumming.
- You always feel good and happy at the end of a drum circle. This is because drumming is very healing and the dynamics of this healing are intensified in a community group setting. The sonic vibrations from the drums actually help heal the energy matrix of the human energy system (i.e. chakras, chi meridians, endocrine system, emotions, etc.)
I’ll stop there but I could really go on and on with all the positive benefits derived by participants in drum circles. One really great way to see for yourself is to try one and experience it firsthand. The most common comment I get from first timers is “I never thought it would be so much fun and so easy”. They all love it – and for good reason.
If you’re interested in learning more about drum circles - here is a great website on drum circles I found on the world wide web: http://www.rhythmweb.com/circle/index.html You can literally spend hours checking out all the cool links on this page.
Tomorrow night I am also going to bring my special “Fibonacci” crystal bowl for the alpha trance groove that we always do at the end of the night – very special - as last week’s participants can attest to. Hope to see you there …
In the Spirit of Love and Peace - See you in the circle…
Namaste

WHAT IS A DRUM CIRCLE?A DRUM CIRCLE IS A GROUP OF PEOPLE COMING TOGETHER TO CREATE IN THE MOMENT MUSIC USING HAND DRUMS AND PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS. A DRUM CIRCLE IS NOT A PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE PERFORMING A PREPARED PIECE OF MUSIC, OR A DRUMMING CLASS LED BY A TEACHER, NOR ANY GROUP RE-CREATING MUSIC IT HAS PLAYED BEFORE. DRUM CIRCLES ARE A FORM OF RECREATIONAL MUSIC MAKING WHICH MEANS THAT THE FOCUS IS NOT ON PERFORMANCE BUT RATHER ON PERSONAL OR GROUP DEVELOPMENT AND WELLNESS OR JUST PLAIN FUN.
May your life be filled with Eternal Bliss and Ecstatic Joy!
Thank You!
