Greetings Drummers!
Wow! How time flies when you’re having fun eh?! Summer went by in a wink and now we’re enjoying a beautiful brisk sunny Autumn with all the leaves changing into sublime hues of gold, ochre, rust, earth, and yellow. Ahhh yes - how intoxicating!
An important note about the next drum circle – in my last email to you I had indicated that the first post summer drum circle would be on October 7th – however, the Canadian Election has changed my plans as they intend to use the Nelson North Shore Hall for a voting station. So – the first post summer drum circle is now going to be on October 21st 2008. The October 7th and October 14th drum circles are now cancelled. Sorry for the confusion but this is due to circumstances beyond my control.
Speaking of control isn’t it interesting how we sometimes let ourselves be bothered by things that are beyond our control? When you really think about it – it’s kind of absurd to let yourself get upset about something that you can do absolutely nothing about. Well – you can do something about it – you can accept it. Why do we find that so hard to do? I think our modern North American cultural/societal environment has trained us to believe that we can control most things in our lives and when things move beyond our control (as they almost always do) we are programmed to fight this and desperately try to regain control of something that cannot be controlled. It’s get worse – after we lose control and finally give up after wasting tons of energy and effort we then berate and get down hard on ourselves for losing control in the first place - so it turns out to be a double whammy on our self esteem and self confidence.
Let me give you some very valuable advice about controlling things in our lives – you can’t really control anything! It may seem or appear that you are controlling something but really it is just waiting to jump off the tracks when you are not paying attention. By controlling something you are possibly preventing the event, person, situation from taking it’s natural course. Many times situations go the way you don’t want them to in order to teach you or someone else a very important lesson in life that you or they inherently need to learn – even if painful. By trying to control and prevent someone else from feeling pain you are depriving them of the very thing that will eventually teach them how to avoid said pain. You are also preventing them from acquiring the growth and wisdom that comes from learning life’s lessons.
You can abstain from doing or participating in something but you can’t control it. You can prefer that something goes your way but you can’t control it to go your way. The best thing about changing all your control issues into preferences is that when the preference isn’t satisfied you don’t have to upset yourself. You can just move on, accept the situation, and keep your peace of mind and heart intact. My mother use to say to me “Oh well, you can’t cry over spilled milk”. She was right – you can’t – what’s the use? The milk is spilled – crying over it only makes everything worse than it really is. It is much better to “prefer” that the milk doesn’t spill than be addicted to the milk not spilling. A preference won’t bother you if it doesn’t happen, an addiction that doesn’t happen will upset you mentally and emotionally. Upgrading an addiction to a preference is a very simple small subtle difference that has an immense positive effect on your state of heart/mind.
Many times in my drum circles a drum circle song/beat goes kind of wonky and maybe even crashes. I can’t possibly control all of the drummers in the circle to drum the way I want them to in order to prevent a wonky crash. Even if I could I wouldn’t want to – how much fun would that be for the participants? We would never reach some of those wonderful hypnotic entrancing beautiful rhythms that I love so much if I was always trying to control the circle. Beautiful creativity is born of random uncontrolled synchronicity. In my books – any level of control is inversely proportionate the level of intuitive creativity, i.e. the more control there is the less creative intuitive synchronicity. Let’s remember that Art = Creativity, not control.
Most people despise being controlled and why not? We are free will beings here on this planet to do as we wish in love and service. Isn’t that what real freedom and choice is all about? Even if a wrong choice is made at least a choice was made and the life lesson learned or appreciated. How can you learn from mistakes if you don’t make them? Can you imagine what the world would be like if no one made mistakes? It wouldn’t be a world that I would want to live in…

WHAT IS A DRUM CIRCLE?A DRUM CIRCLE IS A GROUP OF PEOPLE COMING TOGETHER TO CREATE IN THE MOMENT MUSIC USING HAND DRUMS AND PERCUSSION INSTRUMENTS. A DRUM CIRCLE IS NOT A PERCUSSION ENSEMBLE PERFORMING A PREPARED PIECE OF MUSIC, OR A DRUMMING CLASS LED BY A TEACHER, NOR ANY GROUP RE-CREATING MUSIC IT HAS PLAYED BEFORE. DRUM CIRCLES ARE A FORM OF RECREATIONAL MUSIC MAKING WHICH MEANS THAT THE FOCUS IS NOT ON PERFORMANCE BUT RATHER ON PERSONAL OR GROUP DEVELOPMENT AND WELLNESS OR JUST PLAIN FUN.
May your life be filled with Eternal Bliss and Ecstatic Joy!
Thank You!
