Greetings Drummers,
I want to let you know about a new blog I’ve created where you can see and read all my Drumming From The Heart Grooves’n Views articles. I started the blog with articles from February 5th 2008 and on so there are only a few entries so far including this one.
Please visit this site and bookmark it for future reference. I thank you very much in advance for your divine attention to my weblog. The internet address is http://drummingfromtheheart.blogspot.com/. Please let me know what you think of it and also let me know of any further information you would like to see there. I’m going to be continually adding new information like web links, drum beats/notation, related info and the like as time goes on.
Tonight is going to be a very special drum circle celebration because of the Lunar Eclipse happening on the 21st. It’s also a Full Moon tomorrow – very powerful solar system events going on right now. Both events are occurring at the same time (Moon 3:30UT/Eclipse 3:26UT). This is a very auspicious event and marks the closing of the divine energy window that was opened two weeks ago with the Solar Eclipse and New Moon on February 7th. What better way to celebrate such great planetary energy than by getting together in your community and drumming.
Why is drumming a good thing to do? Well I can think of many good reasons but I will expound on a few important ones:
1. Drumming is healthy because of how it automatically puts us and keeps us in the present moment.
It’s very hard for human beings in this modern day Western society to stay in the present moment because of all the worries and distractions we keep around us. A good way to forget about all those distractions is to sit down and purposefully drum. Drumming engages our body and our mind as one tool. We keep a beat going with our hands/arms as we listen with our ears to complete the physical feedback loop. The input (physical movement of playing the drum) and the output (drum beat/rhythm/sound) fully engages our physicality and awareness. We listen to our drumming and concentrate on playing as we make corrections based on our hearing feedback loop. These corrections can be changes in the rhythm, the volume, the tempo, the intensity, or the position of the drum and/or our hands. All of these different nuances keep us focused in the present and keep our minds from filling up with the ordinary worries, thoughts, and concerns of the day. This is how we become “entrained” by the rhythm and move into a special magic place that heals our hearts and minds. Drumming feels so good because for awhile you are in the “no-mind-zone” and this is especially good to feel – your body loves it. It’s meditation combined with musical creativity – a magical mystical combination that can en-trance your soul. Staying in the present moment also means becoming aware of your environment and everything in it as it relates to you in this exact moment. How are others in a drum circle drumming to harmonize with you? How does the totality of all the drums/drumming in the group sound? What is going on moment to moment in your drum circle or by yourself in your immediate environment as you drum? The more present you are the more joy you will feel because worries can only exist in the past or future and you are not thinking about the past or future when you are in the present – so no worries – just feeling good and having fun. Imagine – having fun that keeps you in the present and is good for you.
2. Drumming is a great way to stay centered and present in your body.
When you are present and drumming there are many things going on in and around your body that you can now become aware of because your mind is not “chattering” and thinking about whatever is not here and now. What does your drum sound like? How do your hands/arms feel playing the drum? How is your drum sound melding with the other sounds around you? What is your breathing doing? How does your body feel? What temperature parameters do you sense? What smells are happening? Do you feel good, elated, joyful, excited, entranced? What else do you sense? All of this and more is going on in the ever present moment that you eternally live in. When you are drumming you have the added element of the vibration and musicality of the drumming impinging and positively affecting your body. The vibrations of the drum stimulate different nervous/limbic systems in your physicality. Serotonin and Dopamine hormones get pumped into your bloodstream from your endocrine glands and this makes you feel even better. It has been proven over and over how sound therapy can heal many different ailments in the human body. When you are totally present in your body your body begins to appreciate the attention and in turn feels good – this is an endless pleasure/joy loop that is not that hard to trigger. You can also become aware of different energies and sensations in your body that ordinary everyday living covers up because of all the distractions keeping you OUT of your body. Your body is a living breathing organism with its own intelligences apart from your mind-brain. When you tap into these biological self-entities you really begin to explore self and discover the rich world within.
3. Drumming is a natural way to shut the mind off and enter the Great Stillness.
Once you have stilled the mind and have entered the “mindless” zone you can then begin to enjoy the immense pleasure and healing that is associated with the “Great Stillness”. Also known as The Void, Nothingness, Nirvana, God, All That Is, Source, etc. This great stillness within is a giant well of creativity and bliss that exists inside our own awareness at a level below the “noise” of daily ordinary life. Our culture is so focused on outside distractions and worries and noises that we never get to listen to that intense stillness within. The stillness is a whole different deeper level of our conscious awareness that most of us don’t even know exists or have never experienced. People that do experience it are immediately transformed by it and want more of it because connection with it feels so good. There are many ways to approach and become aware of the great stillness within and drumming is one of them. Other methods are meditation, ecstatic dance, spiritual retreats, yoga, running, Qigong, Tai-Chi, martial arts, tantric sex, praying, moving meditation, etc. All of these methodologies have the same goal in mind – which is in fact to turn off the mind so that we can then become aware of a very different still world within that is filled with a richness no words can describe. This great stillness is a deeper and more super-conscious awareness and sentience that breaches the confines of time and space. Have you ever seen a sunset or some other beautiful breathtaking nature event/scene that took your breath away and made you feel like time has stopped? Well time did stop because that beautiful scene instantly caused you to access that great stillness within where time and space cannot exist – where thought can’t exist. Tapping into this healing stillness within even for just a few seconds can bring you hours or even days of enlightenment and joy – that lingers just beyond the field of your “ordinary” societal/cultural 3rd dimensional awareness. Learning to tap into and experience the great stillness within is something that is very worthwhile attempting and can bring you the joy and happiness that you may have been searching for all your life. The problem is that you were searching outside of yourself when all along the real gift was inside you. We are divine beings and within us lies the True Divinity of All That Is – that I AM.
To learn more about being in the present moment – I highly recommend Eckhart Tolle’s books – The Power of Now, or The New Earth. You can even take some lessons from him online through Opra’s website - http://www.oprah.com/obc_classic/webcast/begin/anewearth_begin_main.jsp
Learning to be in the present is a skill you will never regret obtaining. Come on out to a Drumming From The Heart drum circle and taste that road to experiencing your inner stillness in a fun and natural healing way.
May your life always be filled with the Bliss and Ecstatic Joy of Inner Connection to The Great Stillness Within.
